Importing 3D Objects

The 3D objects are unique to Anime Studio because they can be manipulated to show several different sides of the 3D object. Anime Studio cannot be used to create 3D objects, but it can use 3D models that are created in other 3D packages and imported into an Anime Studio project.

Note

3D objects can only be imported and manipulated in Anime Studio Pro.

To import a 3D object into Anime Studio, select the File, Import, OBJ 3D Model menu command. This opens a File dialog box where you can locate a 3D model to import. The File, Import menu also includes several prebuilt 3D objects in its default library. These prebuilt objects are located in the 3D Objects folder. Figure 29.1 shows an assortment of the available 3D library objects.

Note

The Library also includes an assortment of 3D objects in the Anime Studio 5 folder, including several 3D animals.

Imported prebuilt models are automatically placed on a 3D layer, and the name of the layer is the object’s file name.

Importing OBJ Models

OBJ is the 3D format that is supported by Anime Studio. OBJ models are common and most 3D programs can output 3D data to this format. You can learn more about this format in Chapter 30, “Using Anime Studio with Other 3D Packages.”

Importing Texture Maps

For OBJ models, textures are referenced and stored as separate MTL files. When an OBJ file is loaded, any referenced MTL texture files are loaded along with it at the same time. If you look into the Library, 3D Objects folder where Anime Studio is installed, you’ll see several OBJ files along with their associated MTL files.

Caution

There are many options available for exporting 3D objects that are set in the 3D program that is doing the exporting. If you are having trouble importing a 3D object or its texture, try changing the export options in the 3D program.
