Sample Proposal

What follows is a sample proposal to give you an idea of what the end result will look like. Notice that it’s not long, but was obviously written with the specific client in mind. It’s succinct, enthusiastic, and confident. I’ve included comments in bold.

Dear George,

I specialize in unique and creative webpage designs. Your veterinary project involves an extra layer of creativity and writing which is the part of design I love. I have included links to two webpage designs with similar functions to yours. This should give you an idea of my conceptual thinking and humor.

A great start, stating the client’s goal and that this is exactly what the contractor specializes in and enjoys. Links to samples of similar work are included. The key here is similar to the client’s project, not just any website pages.

What I’ll provide:

— 5 unique concepts for the homepage design consistent with your current look and brand.

— 3 redesigns based on feedback and discussion

— 1 design with a static display and unique elements

— 1 additional design using dynamic features to enhance the information

— Editable source files upon completion.

Concise plan of action and deliverables.

Timeline:

— First mockups of the 5 homepage designs by noon EST, Friday, Jan. 6, 2012.

— Redesigns and the static and dynamic designs by noon EST, Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2012.

— Final design assembled and delivered by noon EST, Friday, Jan. 13, 2012.

Fixed and reasonable timetable. You can ask if they need it sooner, but don’t let the client rush you and risk producing inferior work.

What, specifically, do you want done with the newsletter sign-up form? I suggest a basic InDesign template, incorporating your brand and look. The center will use editable text and is where the info will be delivered.

Question and possible solution.

I am excited by this project and ready to get started. It lies exactly within my area of expertise and on previous jobs of this type. I have 100 percent positive feedback and recommendations. Please review my profile for the comments. I’m hard working and ready to make your project one more success!

The “why me?” paragraph. It’s enthusiastic and mentions others have been pleased with her work, too.

Let me know if you have any questions or need any additional information. I can provide references on request.

Thank you for your time, Susan

The proposal ends politely with an offer of additional information and references.

That’s it. It’s not too scary or daunting, just thoughtful and tailored for the client. It also doesn’t reek of salesmanship, which can be off putting to both sides. Sure, you must sell yourself, but there are many ways to do this.
