Basic Proposal Structure

Each proposal will be different, as is the personality of the individual writing it. There is no perfect one-size-fits-all proposal template, but you can work from a basic structure. Over time and as you gain experience, you will morph this into your own style.

Consider the following structure:

Introduction paragraph clearly stating the client’s primary project goal and your expertise in solving it.

Mention you’ve included one to three samples of work that are similar to what they’re looking for.

Your plan of action.

The timeline for completing the project.

Questions and/or ideas.

Why you? A short paragraph touting both your enthusiasm for the project and any other accolades you feel are relevant and important. Mention high feedback ratings on Elance.

End with a polite sign off and offer to answer questions or provide references (if you have them).

Given all these elements that need to be included in your proposal, you may think it’ll end up being several pages long. In fact, the elements work together to create proposals that are short and concise but pack a punch.

This structure will serve you well as you begin your freelancing career. Include these key elements specifically tailored to the client in a friendly, upbeat way. You will quickly get the feel for it and make your own adjustments.
