First Contact

In Chapter 2, I emphasized the importance of first impressions, and how this applies just as much online as anywhere else. Oftentimes your proposal is your first contact with the client. If they’ve hunted you down and invited you, perhaps not. But 9 times out of 10, the beginning of your Elance journey will be the first they’ve heard of you.

If the majority of jobs are lost here, then you have the opportunity to really stand out. The key is to not be sloppy or flippant, but to apply practical solutions and attention to the project.

TOP TIPS

Remember the three-legged stool of winning projects: craft a killer proposal; build a portfolio that showcases your talents and answers the question, “Why you?”; and be prompt and professional in your follow-up and replies to client queries. By doing these three things well, you set yourself up for success.

In the next sections, I provide you with the tools to do just this, but I want you to remember and emphasize the fact that herein lies a big part of your road to success. Pay attention to this crucial first contact and have fun with it. Your attitude will come through loud and clear. Let’s begin.
