Standard Edition

,

The Standard Edition of Lync Server provides a relatively easy way to deploy telephony features into a network. Its relatively low cost of entry is based on the fact that it’s meant to run everything on a single server with the potential for adding an edge server if one needs to support external connectivity.

Standard Edition utilizes a local SQL express database to store information and it isn’t eligible for any of the high-availability functions offered by Enterprise Edition. Standard Edition is meant to handle relatively low user loads because its all-in-one nature results in it being less scalable in terms of performance. At the same time, this all-in-one nature makes it easy to deploy and eaiser to troubleshoot than its more advanced cousin, Enterprise Edition.

A typical Standard Edition deployment would contain a single front-end server, a PSTN gateway, and potentially an edge server to service external users. This configuration is sufficient to provide voice and video services to an internal network of users and can still provide services such as public IM connectivity, A/V conferencing, and so on.

Note

It is important to note that Standard Edition doesn’t allow for high availability, so if this is meant to be a PBX replacement, you should strongly consider stepping up to the Enterprise Edition to provide higher uptime.

Tip

Although Lync Server Standard Edition is typically used in smaller deployments, it is perfectly acceptable to deploy both versions into the same architecture. You can mix and match Enterprise and Standard editions if you need to place different levels of service and cost into different locations.
