Troubleshooting

As with any migration, there’s a lot that can go wrong regardless of how well planned in advance. The most important item to check is to ensure that Active Directory is healthy and functioning properly. A close second is ensuring all the required manual DNS changes have been made and DNS works flawlessly. The added convenience of the Deployment Wizard doesn’t lessen the importance of certificates. They are still core to all server and server-client communications.

Be sure to check the various log files that are created. It’s great news that nearly every action, whether done in the Lync Control Panel or the Lync Management Shell, creates a detailed XML log file in the Windows temp directory. Administrators should review these regularly to gain insight into their deployments and understand any errors that occur. The Lync Server event log is also a good place to check for errors. From the Start menu, select Administrative Tools, and then select Event Viewer. Expand the Applications and Services Logs item and then select Lync Server. All events related to Lync Server functions reside here. Often the error description is enough to identify the problem and make clear the resolution.

Some tools need to be installed manually to perform some aspects of the migration process. For example, the OCSWMIBC package must be manually installed before migrating the Response Group configuration to Lync Server.
