Instant Messaging

,

Instant Messaging (IM) is the oldest function available in Lync Server. This is the now-ubiquitous function of being able to see that a contact is online and to send him or her a simple text-based message. Lync Server takes this IM capability to a whole new level. Lync Server continues to support Public IM Connectivity (PIC) with AOL, MSN, and Yahoo! IM, but it is now easier than ever to federate with other Communications Server environments.

Federation effectively sets up a connection between multiple implementations of Communications Server that enable both sides to selectively share presence information with one another. This is especially useful for partner relationships where it’s necessary for the partners to quickly contact one another. One can receive an e-mail from a partner or have a question, and rather than launch into a series of back-and-forth e-mail messages, the partners can simply fire IMs back and forth.

Note

Although this might seem like a small distinction in methods of communications, groups that manage e-mail systems are quite happy when users are able to offload communications to methods such as IM. No e-mail administrator likes to find out that 15% of all the data stored in mail systems is “Where do you want to go for lunch?” conversations.
