Enterprise Edition

,

Enterprise Edition of Lync Server provides much higher availability and scalability than the Standard Edition. Enterprise Edition separates many of the roles that Standard combines and in many cases, it replaces components with higher-performing versions. For example, where Standard Edition can use only a local SQL Express database, Enterprise Edition requires full SQL (preferably 64-bit) and needs that SQL instance to be hosted on another system. This improves scalability by not only using a more robust database, but by isolating the database load from other systems.

Enterprise Edition is able to take advantage of SQL clusters for providing high availability for back-end data. Similarly, it is able to deploy its services into pools and spread the client load across the members of those pools. This provides for protection against a system failure and it provides a method to scale the performance of the system for large deployments.

Tip

Deploying SQL clusters into pools is critical because many Lync Server implementations utilize a somewhat centralized deployment of systems and depends on the WAN for connectivity to this central site. In this type of topology, localized services are often supplemented with a survivable branch appliance. This topic is described in detail in Chapter 11, “SQL.”

When planning for an Enterprise Edition installation, be aware of the following necessary components:

• Windows 2008 x64 SP2 or R2

• .NET Framework 3.5 with SP1 or later

• Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable

• Windows PowerShell 2.0

• Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Native Client

• Microsoft Silverlight 4

• Windows Media Format

• Message Queueing Services

• Directory Service Integration

• Active Directory Management Tools

• IIS 7.0 or 7.5

There are also several specific role services needed by Lync Server for IIS that need to be installed before the installation of Lync Server itself, including

• Static Content

• Default Document

• Directory Browsing

• HTTP Errors

• HTTP Redirection

• ASP.NET

• .NET Extensibility

• ISAPI Extensions

• ISAPI Filters

• HTTP Logging

• Logging Tools

• Tracing

• Anonymous, Basic, and Windows Authentication enabled

• Request Filtering

• Static Content Compression

• IIS Management Console and Scripts and Tools
