Communications Server Sites

,

In Lync Server terms, a Communications Server Site is a set of well-connected computers on a network that contains one or more Lync Server components. In this context, well connected means a high-speed, low-latency network such as a local area network (LAN) or two or more networks connected by high-speed fiber optics.

Tip

Although many readers might recognize this description as being essentially the same as an Active Directory site or an Exchange site, it is important to distinguish that a Communications Server Site does not necessarily map directly to AD sites, based on the requirement of containing one or more Lync Server components.

Each Communications Server Site is defined as either a central site or a branch office site. A central site must contain at least one front-end pool or Standard Edition server. Branch sites will often contain only a survivable branch appliance, which is a concept introduced in this chapter and covered in more detail in Chapter 18, “Enterprise Voice.”
