Lync Server Virtual Topologies

Microsoft has released some documentation so far that discusses a few different sample virtualization topologies. One example covers a Standard Edition deployment and the other covers an Enterprise Edition deployment. For up to 2,000 users, the Standard Edition virtual topology should be sufficient and for any larger deployments, the Enterprise Edition virtual topology should be used.

The issue with these two topologies is many organizations require a deployment that sits somewhere between these two situations. The Enterprise Edition deployment is scaled to a point much higher than most organizations are going to require, and the Standard Edition deployment might be too small and lack the availability desired.

This section summarizes the different topologies tested by Microsoft and offers some additional sample topologies. These additional topologies are not officially supported or recommended by Microsoft support, but organizations can use them as suggested guidance when implementing Lync Server 2010.

Tip

Proper performance and load testing should be completed with any scenario prior to placing the deployment in production.
