DNS Load Balancing

A new and highly useful feature in Lync Server is the capability to implement load balancing via DNS. This enables an administrator to create multiple SRV (service) records. By manipulating the priority associated with them, administrators can enable clients to balance their SIP and Media traffic across multiple servers. This effectively lifts the old restriction where one was allowed only a single _sipinternaltls._tcp record per domain.

In older versions of Communications Server where there was a distributed implementation, an expansive Global Server Load Balancer was required to allow various regions to connect to a local director to log in. Although this might be of less concern to companies that have deployed regionally with multiple subdomains, it is useful for companies that have consolidated to a single AD domain and accompanying DNS domain.

Note

It is important to note that DNS load balancing does not replace the need for hardware load balancing to balance server pools. However, the configuration of said load balancers is primarily for HTTP traffic.
