Find Your Way Around File Windows

Each Office file opens in its own window, with its own set of docked toolbars and Elements Gallery. Every file window includes a specific set of elements, including the following:

  • Title bar. The title bar displays the name of the active document. At the left end of the title bar are the three familiar buttons that have the same function in all programs. You can close the window by clicking the red Close button, temporarily hide the window by clicking the yellow Minimize button, and return the window to its default size by clicking the green Restore button.

    Title bar.

The Hide Toolbars button, which we’ll discuss in "Toolbars" later in this chapter, is at the right end of the title bar.

  • Scroll bars. You click on either side of the scroll box or drag the scroll box to move the document, but not the insertion point, in that direction. The horizontal scroll bar is visible only when the document content exceeds the width of the window; the vertical scroll bar is visible only when the document content exceeds the height of the window.

You can change the effects of clicking in the scroll bar from the Appearance page of the System Preferences window. (This feature is controlled by the operating system rather than the program.)

  • Scroll arrows. You click an arrow to move the document (but not the insertion point) one line up or down, or a short way left or right; or click and hold a scroll arrow to continuously scroll the document.

You can change the location of the scroll arrows from the Appearances page of the System Preferences window. (This feature is also controlled by the operating system.)

  • Status bar. Across the bottom of the program window, the status bar displays information about the current document. You can turn off the display of an item by right-clicking the status bar and then clicking that item.

  • View toolbar. Located at the left end of the status bar, the View toolbar displays buttons for the common document views. Other views might be available from the Views menu.
