Insert Symbols as Text or Graphics

You can insert common symbols—as independent graphics or as text—in a document, in a worksheet cell, or on a slide.

When inserting a symbol into an Excel worksheet, you must first select a container to enter it in. Click a cell or shape and then, on the Symbols page of the Object Palette, click the symbol you want to insert. If you try (purposefully or otherwise) to enter a symbol into an element that doesn’t accept symbols, Excel displays a Reference is not valid error. To clear the error, click OK to close the message box, and then press the Escape key. If you click around for too long trying to figure out what to do, your Mac might go into a tailspin, causing you to force Excel to quit and then restart the program, to regain control of your worksheet.

Tip

If a program isn’t responding, first try to quit the program by clicking Quit on the program menu (or pressing Command+Q). If the Quit command doesn’t work, you can bypass the issues that are preventing the program from closing by clicking Force Quit on the Apple menu (or pressing Command+Option+Escape). In the Force Quit Applications dialog box that opens, in the list of running programs, click the program, and click Force Quit. Then in the confirmation message box, click Force Quit one final time.
