Practice Moving Around in Document Content

In this exercise, you’ll practice ways of moving around in a Word document.

Note

SET UP Open the BookSeries document located in the ~/Documents/Microsoft Press/ 2008OfficeMacSBS/OfficePrograms/ folder.

  1. In the document subtitle, click once at the end of the paragraph to position the insertion point.

  2. Press the Home key to move the insertion point to the beginning of the line.

  3. Press the Right Arrow key two times to move the insertion point to the beginning of the word Fantasy.

  4. Press Option+Right Arrow once to move to the beginning of the word Series.

  5. Press the End key to move the insertion point to the end of the line.

  6. Press Command+End to move the insertion point to the end of the document.

  7. Press Command+Home to move the insertion point to the beginning of the document.

  8. At the bottom of the vertical scroll bar, click the Next Page button to move to the top of the second page.

  9. Click once in the vertical scroll bar above the scroll box to move the document up one screen.

    Note that the location of the insertion point does not change—only your view of the document changes.

  10. Drag the vertical scroll box to the top of the vertical scroll bar.

    The beginning of the document comes into view.

  11. Click to the left of the title to place the insertion point at the beginning of the document, and then at the bottom of the vertical scroll bar, click the Select Browse Object button.

    A gallery of browsing choices opens. You can move to the next instance of an object by clicking the button that represents that object type.

  12. Point to each button in the gallery.

    As you point to each button, the type of object it represents appears at the top of the gallery.

  13. Click the Browse by Page button.

    The insertion point moves from the beginning of page 1 to the beginning of page 2.

CLEAN UP Close the BookSeries document and quit Word.

Word File Formats

When saving files in Word 2008, you can choose from several file formats. For most purposes, the Word Document (.docx) format will be appropriate; this is the Office Open XML Format compatible with Word 2008 for Mac and Word 2007 for Windows.

Tip

Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) macros don’t run in Word 2008, and the Word Document (.docx) file format doesn’t save macro code. If your document includes VBA macro code that you want to preserve, save your file in the Word Macro-Enabled Document (.docm) or Word Macro-Enabled Template (.dotm) file format.

Other common file formats include:

  • Word 97–2004 Document (.doc). The default document format for previous versions of Word (Word 98–Word 2004 for Mac and Word 97–Word 2003 for Windows).

  • Word Template (.dotx). A format for XML-based templates containing document content and settings such as styles, page layout, AutoText entries, custom keyboard shortcut assignments, and menus.

  • Word 97–2004 Template (.dot). The document template format for previous versions of Word (Word 98–Word 2004 for Mac and Word 97–Word 2003 for Windows).
