Practice Adding Cover Pages

In this exercise, you’ll add a cover page to a document, enter information on the cover page, and then change the cover page design.

Note

SET UP Open the FrostKing1 document from the ~/Documents/Microsoft Press/2008OfficeMacSBS/FinishDocuments/ folder.

  1. On the Standard toolbar, in the Zoom list, click Two Pages.

  2. Click the Document Elements tab to expand the Elements Gallery.

The Elements Gallery opens, displaying the Cover Pages gallery.

  3. If necessary, click the right arrow to display additional cover pages, and then click the Cover Page 13 thumbnail, which depicts a blue background with a pattern of pale blue dots.

The first page of the document moves to the right, and the selected cover page appears to its left. The cover page displays three text placeholders: [Document Title], [Document Subtitle], and [Author]. If your name is saved as part of your user information, your name appears in place of the [Author] placeholder.

  4. Double-click the [Document Title] placeholder to select it, and then type The Frost King. Press Tab to move to the [Document Subtitle] placeholder, and then type A Flower Fable. Finally, press Tab to move to the [Author] placeholder (or your name) and type Louisa May Alcott.

  5. In the Cover Pages gallery, click the Cover Page 11 thumbnail. Then click the Document Elements tab to close the Elements Gallery.

Word applies the selected design to the cover page. Notice that the cover page has a different color scheme than the thumbnail—it has picked up the document theme’s color scheme.

Notice also that Word retained the document title and the author’s name, but reset the document subtitle to its original placeholder. This would appear to be a bug in the current version of Word 2008 for Mac, perhaps one that will have been addressed by the time you read this book.

  6. If Word reset the document subtitle or any other field, re-enter the appropriate information. Then save the document in the FinishDocuments folder as My Frost King.
