Run a Slide Show

After you put the effort into creating a fabulous PowerPoint slide show, you need to know how to present it to an audience.

To start a slide show from within PowerPoint, you can use any of the following methods:

  • Click View Slide Show on the Slide Show menu.

  • Click the Slide Show button on the Standard toolbar.

  • Press Command+Return.

The slide show starts with the slide that is currently displayed in PowerPoint. The on-screen show displays the slides at the largest size that can fit on your screen while maintaining the aspect ratio. Any leftover space is black.

If you don’t have an Apple Remote Control, the simplest way to move linearly between slides is to click the mouse button (anywhere on the screen) to move to the next slide, or press Control and click to move to the previous slide. You can also move between slides by using these keyboard commands:

  • To move to the next slide, press the Spacebar, Return, N, Page Down, Down Arrow, or Right Arrow key.

  • To move to the previous slide, press the Delete, Page Up, Up Arrow, or Left Arrow key.

  • To move to the first slide in the presentation, press the Home key.

  • To move to a specific slide, type the slide number, and then press Return. The number won’t be visible on-screen.

  • To move to the last slide in a presentation, press the End key.

You can end the presentation by pressing the Escape key.

Another way to navigate through a slide show is by using the commands on the Slide Show menu, which you can display by clicking the inconspicuous button that appears in the lower-left corner of the slide each time you move the mouse. You can use commands on this toolbar in the following ways:

  • Move between slides by clicking Next, Previous, or Last Viewed, or by clicking Go To Slide and then clicking the specific slide you want to display.

  • To display the slides in a custom slide show, click Custom Show, and then click the show.

  • To hide the slide show without closing it, click Black Screen. (To redisplay the slide show, click the screen, or press a key to redisplay the slide show and take the corresponding action.)

  • To change an on-screen event, point to Screen, and then do one of the following:

    • Click Pause to pause a self-running presentation.

    • Click Erase Pen to remove annotations from the slide.

  • To hide the pointer or change its form, point to Pointer Options and then do one of the following:

    • Click the pointer format you want.

    • Point to Pen Color, and then click the color you want. Choosing a pen color automatically changes the pointer to an annotation pen that you can use to write on slides during an on-screen slide show.
