Chapter 17: Interoperability

Create data shortcuts. The ability to load design information into a project environment is an important part of creating an efficient team. The main design elements of the project are available to the data shortcut mechanism, but some still are not.

Master It List the top-level branches in Prospector that cannot be shared through data shortcuts.

Solution Points, point groups, sites, corridors, assemblies, subassemblies, and survey pieces are all unavailable as shortcuts.

Import and export to earlier releases of AutoCAD. Being able to work with outside clients or even other departments within your firm who do not have Civil3D is an important part of the concept of playing nicely together.

Master It What are some methods for sharing your Civil 3D drawings with AutoCAD Release 2004 users?

Solution In no particular order, exporting to LandXML, eTransmitting with the option to save to Release 2004 with exploded AEC objects, or exporting to AutoCAD Release 2004 are some of the methods.

Import and export to third-party CAD programs. Exchanging drawings from other CAD formats is another important method that lets you work together on a common project, no matter what CAD program is being used.

Master It What tools can be used to receive CAD files from a firm using MicroStation?

Solution The Import tool on the Insert tab and Import panel will allow you to import MicroStation (DGN) files. You could also request an XML file, which imports just fine into Civil 3D via the LandXML tool found on the Import panel of the Insert tab.

Use basic map queries to filter data. Map 3D is the program that Civil 3D is built on. In Map there are numerous things that can be accomplished; using queries is one of them.

Master It Open GISMAP.dwg. This is the subdivision you have been working on for most of the book. Insert the PaMunicipalities shape file found in the GISMunicip_2011 folder. You only want to have the Felton municipality visible on the plan.

Solution

2. Make sure the Task pane is also open by typing MAPWSPACEON↵.

3. In the Task pane, click the Data tool and select Connect To Data. The Data Connect palette opens.

4. Click the SHP icon, navigate to the C:MasteringMunicip_2011 folder, select the PaMunicipalities2011_01 shape file, and click Open.
