Resize Columns and Rows

A worksheet is divided into alphabetically named columns (A, B, C, and so on) and numerically named rows (1, 2, 3, and so on). The column letters and row numbers are indicated by the column headings and row headings that appear by default above and to the left of the worksheet. The columns of each new worksheet are of equal width, and the rows are of equal height.

Resize Columns and Rows

A new worksheet is neatly divided into columns and rows.

A cell is named with the column letter and the row number of the column and row that intersect at that point (for example, A1). If you enter more data into a cell than it can display, some of the data will not be visible, except when the cell is active. You can increase the size of a cell by increasing the width of its column or the height of its row. Of course, this affects the width and height of all the cells in the column or row—you can’t change the size of an individual cell.

You can resize columns and rows in several ways:

  • You can drag the separator that is to the right of the column heading to the left or right.

  • You can drag the separator that is below the row heading up or down.

  • You can resize a column to precisely fit the width of its contents by double-clicking the separator to the right of the column.

  • You can resize a row to precisely fit the height of its contents by double-clicking the separator below the row.

  • You can specify the exact width of one or more selected columns in the Column Width dialog box, and the exact height of one or more selected rows in the Row Height dialog box.

Resize Columns and Rows

You display these dialog boxes by right-clicking the column or row heading, or right-clicking anywhere in a selection of column or row headings, and then clicking Column Width or Row Height. Changes you make in the dialog box affect the selected columns or rows.
