Counterculture Color
With its focus in urban areas, the counterculture is often represented
by black, especially with regard to more recent phases—punk, new
wave, and rave. With the addition of a variety of cool grays, in several
values, the cool affectation of these neutrals acts as a backdrop to a
number of other sub-schemes in color that distinguish the various
periods. The exceptions to this black/gray color base are 1960s mod
and 1970s psychedelia, both periods evoked by a riot of color—mod
by violet, a more yellow version of Kelly green, and pink; psychedelia
by bright orange, rust, brown, green, red, and blue, usually in combi-
nations that involve all of these simultaneously. The new wave color
scheme adds brighter versions of 1950s pink, blue, and sea foam
green, along with chartreuse and hot red, to the black and gray back-
drop; rave culture pushes the saturation of these colors into the acid
and fluorescent realm, adding fluorescent orange, lime green, and
aqua to the mix.
