The Type Style Finder
While some claim that it’s not so much which typeface is chosen as
how the type is arranged that really matters, the undeniable fact is that
typefaces—by virtue of their abstract shapes and details—carry some
messaging with them. The concepts or moods they convey may vary
among audiences, but part of a designer’s task is to target his or her
audience as directly as possible and thus understand how the forms of
given type styles might resonate better with them.
Following are forty-three type style categories, sorted by mood, concept,
time frame, and age group. At the beginning of each category is a
design project that exemplifies the category, along with a brief overview
of the characteristics that create an appropriate association in type.
Specimens related to a given category are each shown in their full
alphabet and as a line sample. Rounding out each category is a color
palette that may further help direct decisions during the design process.
A process color formula—given as percentage builds of cyan, magenta,
yellow, and black—is provided for each swatch in the palette.
Though these categories are by no means exhaustive, they offer an
introduction to looking at formal qualities in type and color so that
designers may more thoroughly consider the typefaces they select to
get their jobs done.
