Fantasy Color
The fantastic in color is embodied by hues that are deep, rich, cool,
and jewel-like to the point of being unnatural. Supersaturated
blues, burgundies, deep pinks, and violets—ultramarine blue, in
particular—that occur rarely in nature, form a base palette for
warmer colors such as blood red and deep, warm gold. Alternately,
yellowish and brownish greens evoke the scales and hides of mon-
sters and creatures from lagoons or outer space. Black and cold
charcoal gray add depth and, when used to surround or contrast
the vivid tones of the palette, help enhance their unreal saturation.
The hint of mineral colors, such as copper, bronze, deep umber,
and silver gray evoke rocks and metal, minerals used for incanta-
tion, or alien spacecraft.
