Elegant Color
Like elegant typography, color becomes elegant when it shows
restraint. Colors that are not highly saturated tend to be perceived
as elegant; as they approach a more neutral, grayer state, they
seem smokier, a little more mysterious and subdued. Pale colors
are also considered elegant, but more toward the cooler end of the
spectrum: icy blues, violets, and greens. Neutrals such as taupe,
gray, and olive also fall into this category. Close-in analogous rela-
tionships among colors can provide a sense of elegance, showing
restraint in their selection: a warm gray, a cool gray, and an olive
green, for example, are close together on the color wheel. Reducing
the number of variables that differentiate colors in combination
adds sophistication—for example, if the colors being used are all
the same value and saturation but change in temperature.
