Renaissance Color
Renaissance innovation developed, in part, from an expansion in
travel and commerce between Europe and the East brought on by
the Crusades; Renaissance color, therefore, includes Eastern and
Islamic influence on the core European color scheme of heraldry
and ritual. The base color family of red, yellow, blue, green, and
violet from the medieval color palette is refined and enriched by
desaturating and deepening them, producing an array of burgundies,
golden ochres, deeper blues, forest and hunter greens, and burgundy
violets of a smokier, more refined value. Exotic rust brown, umber,
and olive allude to the spice trade, while parchmentlike neutral,
deep burgundy violet, and warm charcoal gray hint at the scholarly
aspect of the Renaissance period.
