Psychotic Color
Extremely vivid colors in unusual, generally complementary, combi-
nations—red-orange with acid green, bright purple with sickly
olive ochre, deep blue-violet with acid lemon yellow—may pair with
very cold gray to convey the emotional disconnect of this mental
state. Psychotic color often has more to do with the quantity of such
colors—using them in an overwhelming volume—than with their
specific hue identities. Red is a mainstay of most aggressive color
schemes because of its ability to arouse and to evoke violence; heat-
ing red with a touch of yellow, toward the orange but still clearly
red, enhances its aggressive nature. Treating supersaturated colors
with fluorescent ink will augment their psychotic quality.
