Wood, vegetation, earth—deep, saturated neutrals and a variety of
green hues, from bright and leafy to dark, grassy, and olive—all
convey a sense of natural, growing things. Browns, whether muted
and cooler or rich and warm, connote natural materials and ground
viewers emotionally. They also provide a backdrop for more vibrant
colors, especially green. In combination with jewel tones (saturated
violets and fuchsia, deep reds, and amber), brown and green evoke
the garden, the landscape, and vegetables. Intense colors hint at
vitality, health, and energy. Combining rich colors, including saturated
neutrals, creates a sense of sensuous growth and abundance. Mixing
analogous colors in ranges of neutral greens, golds, and browns adds
subtlety, sophistication, and a sense of ecological thoughtfulness.
