Type styles that are considered elegant fall under many different categories.
The very lightweights of corporate sans serifs, for example, are considered
elegant, as are script typefaces. Often, a sense of elegance derives from
condensed faces with large lower counters or other exaggerated proportions.
Contrast in the weight of strokes, in which thicks and thins either come
together crisply or round off into each other organically, also creates a sense
of elegance. Mixing type styles that are similar in construction but exhibit
moderate contrast in their details, weight, or style, imparts a sense of subtle
differences that may be perceived as sophisticated.
Serenity and a hint of glamour, the contrast of sharp detail and subtle
proportion, lightness and curves—a sense of elegance in type can be
achieved any number of ways. Above all, it comes down to a sense of
restraint enriched by style. Typefaces popular in fashion marketing—
as well as sleek corporate styles and classical forms—can be equally
effective, given the right space and sensitivity to scale.
