Refreshing Color
Like water, fresh fruit, and lively typefaces, refreshing color exudes
a crisp, bright feeling that connotes energy, health, and coolness.
Green, teal, and lighter, intense blue hues contribute to the palette’s
sparkle and cooling splash, while their complements—bright yellow-
orange and fuchsia—act as foils, intensifying each side of the palette
through chromatic contrast. Unexpected combinations, such as a
hot red alongside a more yellow green, supplemented by a cool teal,
add freshness and buzz, while analogous combinations of blues
and greens create a more subdued, watery experience. Shifting the
analogous colors in such a combination apart from each other—a
blue toward the more violet end of the spectrum, a green toward
the yellow—and balancing them out with a centrally analogous teal,
makes for a vivacious tension among the related colors that is none-
theless sophisticated in its restraint.
