Hollywood Heyday Color
The color palette of this time frame is subtle and varied, mixing
neutrals and desaturated hues of the late 1920s and early 1930s
with neutrals, metallics, and bolder hues prevalent toward the
end of World War II. Elegant mauves, pinks, and lavenders; cool,
almost-colored grays; white, cream, and ivory; and neutral gray,
black, and white, are characteristic of photography and film-indus-
try fashions and interiors. Cherry and walnut wood tones evoke the
sumptuous offices of Hollywood moguls, as does a deep green that
is almost black—a reference to marcasite and marble used for inte-
rior detailing. Copper, silver, bronze, and a sultry, lipstick red—
even cooler than the red of the Machine Age—bring a darker and
more vivid range of neutral and warm color to the palette.
