Urban Color
If there’s any single color associated with the city, it’s black. The
density and aloof formality of black can connote snobbishness as
well as power and superiority; it is the color of choice for musicians,
artists, punks, rappers, and the fashionable elite of metropolitan
society. Gray comes in a close second, especially darker, charcoal
grays, warm or cool. At a value deeper than 50 percent black, gray
begins to take on a sense of luxury, the feel of stone and concrete,
and the depth of black, without the attitude. Gray is, however,
detached—sophisticated yet disconnected despite its density. Other
neutrals, especially deep olive, leather brown, and cocoa, enrich
and warm the palette, adding a sense of value. The punch of hot,
saturated red and orange, along with steely blue-green, reminiscent
of glass, act as counterpoints; a pale, creamy yellow, almost white,
rounds out the scheme.
