Sinister Color
Black, of course, is a sinister, terrifying color. Its deep, unknowable
space is a metaphor for evil and nothingness; in large quantities,
though often sophisticated, it becomes a place of fear: the moonless
night, the closed crypt, the back alley. Colors with very deep val-
ues, approaching that of black, contribute to a sense that there is
little light available and, in combination with black, create an indis-
tinct space. Dark, bloody red, violet, blue-violet, and green allude
to violence, magic, decomposition, and reptilian nightmares. Very
dark, indeterminate neutrals round out the palette and suggest the
earth and stone of graves or the unlit pits of a murderer’s lair.
