Summary

This chapter explained the basics of webpages used by SharePoint Foundation. The two main types of webpages that can be created by using the browser are wiki pages and Web Part pages. Each wiki page or Web Part page contains unique content; each type is created from a template stored in a specific location on the SharePoint server file system, known as the SharePoint root directory.

The chapter then explained how to create and format these pages by using SharePoint Designer, where you saw that you can modify the same content area that you can by using the browser. But with SharePoint Designer, when you use Advanced Edit Mode, you can edit content outside the main content area. However, this results in a customized page that might cause performance problems. Finally, you saw how to create application pages; that is, those pages with _layouts in their URL.

The next chapter will provide details on how to add, edit, and connect Web Parts on pages.
