Summary

This chapter detailed how you can incorporate external content by basic SharePoint Foundation no-code solutions with SharePoint Designer, using the Data Source gallery and BCS components: ECTs, External lists, and external data columns. The external content can be presented by using either the Data Source gallery or BCS with the Data Form Web Part. External content in External lists can also be presented by using the XLV Web Part. More advanced solutions can be built with Visual Studio 2010.

BCS is a new, massive addition to SharePoint Foundation 2010. It was first introduced in the Enterprise Edition of Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007, and the full capability of BCS, both on the client and server side, can only be achieved out-of-the-box with the Enterprise Edition of SharePoint Server 2010.

External content can be used with your users’ computers by using Office 2010 applications, although with SharePoint Foundation, you might need to develop VSTO packages to fully exploit client-side solutions.

The BCS provides a method of providing access to external content without the need to redefine how to connect the external systems for each site that must use that external content. However, as an ECT designer, you do need higher permissions than is required with the Data Source gallery, and you will need to collaborate closely with the SharePoint administrator to implement BCS solutions. Also, as changes to BCS solutions can affect many sites over many web applications, a release management process should be implemented. Changes to Data Source gallery solutions only affect one site.
