Summary

SharePoint 2010 is a platform, and therefore, the components that are available out of the box with SharePoint Foundation 2010 are only a subset of the components that can be developed. You can almost guarantee that for anything you see within SharePoint Foundation, there is a SharePoint 2010 API, web service, data structure, and framework that you can use to mix and match components into your own solution.

With SharePoint 2010, Microsoft has tried to present users with the tools to complete a task as quickly as they can within the context of the page, with a simple interface and reusable controls.

In this chapter, you explored extending the UI by using the browser, SharePoint Designer, and Visual Studio. Use SharePoint Designer for unique business solutions, prototypes, and custom actions where you want to extend the server ribbon on views, forms, and list item menus (also known as edit control blocks) for a specific list or library. Use Visual Studio for everything else.
