DAY 95 | PORTRAITS |
For this portrait to happen, I had to be in the right place at the right time, which luckily for me I was. Shortly after photographing Mark Knopfler, I was in a bar in London with some friends and met one of my favorite musicians, David Byrne, who started a band at art school called Talking Heads. He was hanging out with some other musician friends of mine who were in a new band and about to release their first album.
After saying “hi” to my friends, I went up and introduced myself, and asked him flat out if I could make a portrait of him. He agreed, and I tried my new “Light Works” technique with him, but this time using color-slide film, cross-processed in color-negative developer, resulting in this cool and saturated image. I also knew that he would enjoy the process, and this image is the result of a great collaboration during an afternoon using two rear-cycling flashlights and some ambidextrous hand movements. —SA
