Posing Two Models

STRANGERS NO MORE

In most professional circumstances, the models that you chose to work with will meet for the first time on the shoot. Start by having them pose side by side, getting a feel for the way each carry themselves and handle direction. If one seems more comfortable than the other, use him or her to lead the other into a pose. Once the awkwardness of posing two strangers together is over, the fun can begin!

It’s not necessary that both models look into the camera. Often the image is stronger if each of them is looking in other directions or at each other. Try poses where one looks to the camera and the other is instructed to look in various directions. Then try the reverse.

In this image, the women were directed to pull on each other’s clothing for a tug-of-war feel that would add tension and drama to the pose. A slight fan breeze was added to accentuate the direction of the motion. The image was shot with three lights. A 72-inch parabolic umbrella was positioned directly in front of them, with the photographer standing in front of the large light. Two strip lights were used on each side. A Hasselblad HD3 with an 80mm lens was the camera of choice. —MR
