The Insect World

ZOOMING DOWN TO THEIR LEVEL

As sophisticated as people are, with the belief that we are the superior species on this planet, there are creatures that just don’t seem to care what we think of them. They display an alien appearance, with multiple appendages, and weird methods of mobility—buzzing around with impossibly tiny wings or with outsized, transparent sails.

Of course these aren’t aliens at all—they’re merely insects. Insects may look strange, but they make interesting, challenging photo subjects. To get a good, close-up image of an insect, it’s advantageous to get within a few inches of them, which can be difficult. An easier way is to use a telephoto lens and snap away at a distance. A tripod isn’t necessary if a lens with image stabilization is used. Wait for the insect to come to rest. With your camera set on Shutter Priority at the fastest shutter speed lighting conditions will allow, take the shot. If everything is done correctly, the picture will always be fascinating. —WTD
