DAY 56 | SPORTS & PHOTOJOURNALISM |
No player had ever returned the opening kickoff of a Super Bowl for a touchdown. Devin Hester, #23, the kick returner for the Chicago Bears, was having a career season, and I thought there was a strong probability this could occur.
I positioned myself far downfield of the ball in the event he eluded all 11 players of the Indianapolis Colts. This photo is of Devin jumping over the outstretched arms of the Colts kicker, Adam Vinatieri, the last person who had a chance to stop him from scoring on the opening kickoff of Super Bowl XLI.
Knowledge of the sport, the teams, and the specific strengths of the players helped me make the decision to be in the right place to capture a record-setting event. —TH
