Vanitas

BY KATHRYN OSGOOD

Kathryn Osgood, a San Francisco-based freelance photographer, has always had a strong interest in photographing the natural landscape. Her fascination with the technological developments of photography has led to her current exploration of digital montage.

This photograph is part of a series of images that interpret the still-life vanitas paintings of the late 16th- and 17th-century Flemish artists. Typical elements used were skulls, clocks, decaying food or flowers, books, maps and luxurious items such as gold and goblets. Dark, moody light conveys their detail and texture. While this work is derived from the genre, the interpretation focuses on objects, composition, light, and precision rather than a message of mortality or impermanence.
