FANS BEHAVING BADLY

Sporting event rivalry games create heightened emotions for both players and fans. During a U.S. Open Cup soccer game, the Portland Timbers fans held up their scarves in response to a Seattle Sounders player’s injury. The scarves said “No Pity” or “No Pity in the Rose City,” as the Seattle player lay on the field getting medical attention. Though not politically correct, it was entertaining and made for a nice photo. I used a 400mm telephoto lens to concentrate on the fans in the stands with the scarves. Long telephoto lenses have a compressing effect, making the many rows of fans seem like a wall. —TH
