Manipulating the direction and quality of light striking your subject can dramatically affect the results. In order to cast a shadow on the front of the subject and create a three-dimensional look, I placed light sources on each side and slightly behind the ballerina’s legs.
When using this technique, you should attempt to only cast one main shadow on the ground. Too many shadows will give the image an unnatural feel. —TH
