FILM GRAIN AND DESATURATING

Digital images captured in the RAW format can be edited for color balance, exposure, and contrast to enhance properly captured images or resolve problems in images that were not shot under ideal lighting conditions.

This image was first opened in Camera Raw in Photoshop and saved as a tiff. A duplicate layer was made for all retouching of the image, and it was edited in a film-grain plug-in that emulates all characteristics of classic film stocks. This tool is like a traditional film processing lab, allowing the user to control all aspects of grain, contrast, and density. This unifies the use of the clone stamp and healing brush, blanketing the image in a uniform grain pattern, and giving it more of an analog feel that digital images lack. A black and white adjustment layer is created, and the opacity is reduced to 20 percent to desaturate the entire image and condense the color palette. —MR
