Secret Garden

DON’T HAVE A FOREST? MAKE ONE!

To create the feel for the Secret Garden–themed photo shoot, we rounded up about 50 large branches and placed them on gray muslin that covered 15 feet of floor. Dried leaves and grasses were added for texture. Several branches with dried leaves intact were hung from the ceiling in a 10 to 15 foot range from the model.

The 200mm lens shot at f/8 about 30 feet from the model, compressed the appearance of the space and created a forest look. Hemp rope aged with wood stain and wrapped in dried grapevines supported the swing from a steel girder. A 22-inch beauty dish provided the key light off to the right of the model. The other front fill light was a 72-inch octagonal soft box placed 10 feet away to the left and powered near its lowest setting. A 16-inch diffused beauty dish was directly overhead. Directly behind, two strip boxes with no diffusion against the back wall provided the rim lighting for the model. Two strobe lights with barn doors were aimed at the canopy from behind to outline their shape. —MR
