Onstage

LINDA MARLOWE, ACTRESS

Linda Marlowe is a powerful and engaging actress, with a distinct style and stage presence all of her own. For her Brits off Broadway in-character portrait, I drew on her scenes on a trapeze, high up over the stage, where she nimbly jumps up and curls a leg over the wooden handle and glides into a seated position. She had mastered the technique and was simply captivating in her role in No Fear! What was more amazing was her ability to very confidently sit up there and recount her life’s experience as part of the play, seeming to be sitting in a comfortable chair, nonchalantly swinging a leg back and forth. She kept the audience on the edge of their seats and so impressed me that I could not imagine photographing her doing anything else.

This was lit with a single strobe head into a silver umbrella positioned behind the camera and balanced to allow the colored stage lights to come through in the background. The composition was further enhanced by her outstretched arms, in effect showing her ease of sitting high above the stage without a safety mat or harness—truly showing no fear. —SA
