Stop Action

BLINK, AND IT’S GONE

Wildlife is cautious, and moves very slowly...until the right time. Then they become a blur of motion. If your intention is to get a shot when the action is at its peak, it takes a quick eye and a fast shutter speed.

Watching a robin hop around a newly mown lawn is fascinating. They frequently stop and cock their head to the side, listening for sounds under the ground. When they suddenly thrust their beak downward, if they’ve calculated correctly, they come up with a juicy worm.

To capture the moment, set your camera to Shutter Priority mode, using the highest shutter speed conditions will allow. If you’re fortunate, your LCD monitor will reveal a startling sight: a robin pulling a worm out of the ground. —WTD
