Wind Farms

GIANTS OF THE EARTH

When the word “skyline” is mentioned, people tend to think of big cities and their famous structures, such as the Empire State Building, the Eiffel Tower, or Big Ben.

What all of these structures have in common is their distinctive form, or outline, but you don’t have to live in a city to understand the concept of a skyline. Rural areas also boast well-defined shapes that immediately bring recognition, such as a barn or silo, or more recently, the giant wind turbine.

With a push on for a more “green” country, wind farms are popping up, and the distinctive shape of a turbine is unmistakable. They look like giant propellers stuck on a 300-foot pole. You can’t miss ’em.

While they might be scary to little kids, wind turbines make excellent photo subjects, especially at sunrise or sunset when they’re thrown into silhouette. Set your camera on Program mode, take multiple shots at various focal lengths, and use different areas of the sky to determine exposure. You’ll get splendid results. —WTD
