Use of Light: Silhouetting

ROMANCING THE BLACK

Setting the camera to expose for the sunlight causes backlit subjects and objects in the frame to become silhouetted. Here some surfers were walking across the sand in Hermosa Beach, California, after an afternoon in the ocean water. I was able to capture a timeless iconic beach lifestyle image: surfers, volleyball nets, lifeguard tower, pier, sun, and sand. The photo has a warm feeling to it even though it is fall and the surfers are wearing wet suits. —TH
