Framing

THIS TIME, BEING FRAMED IS A GOOD THING!

Framing is one of the secrets to making your prints look sensational. For a long time, I didn’t frame the photographs that hang in my own studio. I had them mounted on substrates that added a finished edge and allowed them to be hung on the wall with no distraction. But once I discovered the finished look that framing adds to a print, I never hung another without having it framed.

The photograph or your own sense of style will often dictate the style of frame. You may also base your decision on the furniture and décor in the room. You will want to consider whether your print will hang in groups, and make your frame choice accordingly.

Standard-size frames up to 16 × 20 are generally available in local stores, but for a truly custom look, you should become familiar with your local framing gallery. If there is not one near you or you want a more affordable option, online retailers offer a wide selection of frames in custom sizes. Be aware that some of these frames are delivered unassembled; frames that require assembly are generally referred to as kits and may require a screwdriver or an Allen wrench. —CWN
