Working with Water

SPLISH SPLASH

Working with water in a studio setting can be a wet and wild time! But it can also be a disaster if not well planned, so take precautions to keep electrical cords and lighting equipment away and out of contact with water. Keep in mind the model’s comfort and have a heater that can fan air to keep her warm.

To achieve the softened look of shooting through a mist of water in this photograph, two assistants stood on each side with spray bottles. One stood near the model and the other a few feet closer to the lens to create a depth in the mist. Each sprayed the water upward to allow it to rain down. Four strobe lights without diffusion were aimed toward the model and camera to get the water to show up in the exposure. The whole set was sprayed prior to the shoot to saturate all of the branches and swing. A 22-inch beauty dish on a boom stand provides the key light, and 72-inch octagonal soft box is placed 12 feet away to provide a soft fill light. —MR
