Sexual Orientation

WHO IS THE PHOTO ABOUT?

Why is this subject such a hotbed of controversy and disagreement? Why is it confusing for some and easily accepted for others? How does one visually define sexual orientation?

Being able to name someone a man or a woman is an act of self-preservation for many and for others a momentary designation. Presenting the viewer with images that are difficult to define instigates discussion and consideration and often a point of confusion. Documenting sexual orientation is not always about the person being photographed but can be about the person viewing the photo. It can become an opportunity for the viewer to accept, identify, or deny. For those who have never been presented with anything other than traditional views about sexuality, this can be difficult.

Explore this topic with an eye toward the larger social topic of what society defines as normal. Choose to place the subject in a variety of environments. Follow the subject through daily rituals and routines. Ask them to show you who they are. —MLR
