WHEN IT ALL COMES TOGETHER PERFECTLY

The image of the girl looking over her shoulder was captured on Fuji medium-format transparency film with a Hasselblad 500 series camera body. This Swiss series of cameras arguably are the most durable and well-crafted manual cameras in production. So reliable, they have been travelling to space with astronauts since the Apollo program. The crispness of the focused areas and range of color and detail is characteristic at all apertures of the finely crafted German Carl Zeiss lenses that are paired with the camera.

An aperture of 4.0 was used to focus the viewer’s attention on the face while allowing the body to become a soft blur. Shot in studio, the earth-tone palette of flooring, furniture, and clothing were selected to complement the model’s skin tone and feature the work of the makeup artist. All of the strobe lights used were diffused with small soft boxes at several angles to bathe the subject in softly directed light. The final image required almost no retouching of the skin due to the nature of the soft lighting and limited depth of field. —MR
